Current status of DACA Program (July 2021)
The DACA program has weathered quite a few changes over the years, and was almost ended entirely during the Trump administration. Currently, existing DACA recipients may continue to renew their DACA status and their work authorization. While new DACA applications have been accepted by USCIS over the past eight months, giving many Dreamers who had previously missed out on filing for DACA hope, a Texas federal court ruled in July 2021 that new DACA applications cannot be processed. This has left many Dreamers who had already applied and are currently waiting for a decision in limbo, and USCIS has started to cancel their interview appointments. While the Texas judge’s decision will be appealed to a higher court, new applications for DACA will not be processed by USCIS in the meantime.
