Securing Financial Support For Children
Under Pennsylvania law, parents have an obligation to support their children until the children are 18 years old or graduate from high school, whichever occurs later. Child support is calculated based on a formula called the Child Support Guidelines. The support amount is based on the number of minor children between the parties, regardless of whether or not the parents are or have ever been married, and the net monthly incomes of the parties.
Like spousal support, when there is a change in the financial circumstances of either party, either party may petition the court to modify the support order to either increase or decrease the support obligation to reflect the change in financial circumstances.
Do You Have Questions About An Existing Child Support Order?
Deviations can be made from recommended guideline support calculation for various reasons such as the custodial time enjoyed by each parent, childcare expenses, mortgage obligations, medical expenses, children from another relationship and so forth. Attorney Tanner can guide you through these murky waters to ensure that the support payment that you pay or receive is fair under the circumstances of your case.
